Case Study: Sculptor Grainger Mckoy |
The life like sculptures of Grainger Mckoy are constructed of materials such as basswood, metal, and oil paint by hand and are then transformed into precious adornment items by in house technologies used by RJMRP.
Wood CarvingGrainger shipped his sculptures to RJM to be Laser Scanned into a digital format. The original feather pattern was approximately 2.5 inches in length. 3d Scan DataOnce the Laser Scan is completed the data is then cleaned to remove any artifacts or noise introduced by the scanning process. The result is an exact digital replica of Graingers sculpture. Unlike traditional RTV or LTV Mold making techniques, the 3d digital version of the sculpture can be translated and modified into any size or complex arrays of the original pattern. Milled WaxThe 3d digital sculpture is then scaled to 1/3 of its original size and machined from a cast friendly carving wax which is ideal for investment casting. The pattern was also mirrored in the computer to create a matching, mirrored set. Finished EarringsFinished earrings are cast in 14k yellow gold from the carving wax patterns.
