While I was learning the ways of CAD jewelry creation, I bought a 4 axis-milling machine with which to generate master models from my Rhino product development. As my proficiency improved, I kept that mill very busy. However, as my modeling became more complex, I encountered the need to develop time consuming milling strategies in order to access the increasingly complex features of my geometries. Now, the mill was still busy but I was also very much consumed with nurturing my parts through the milling process and NOT so much with casting and fit-out of my finished goods for delivery. My wax models were more impressive but my deliveries were bottle necked. What to do?

I had initially used service bureaus to both mill and print (grow) my parts prior to the acquisition of my Minitech mill. The 3D printers were generally capable of outputting complex geometries but printed (grown) models from the technologies I was familiar with generally came back with rough skins (surfaces). They were not close to being as smooth as my milled waxes and they were also terribly fragile. Many times, those parts would arrive broken in shipping – costing time and money to replace. I didn’t like the thought of continually wrestling with rough surfaces in my castings at finishing time. Extensive finishing of rough parts brings with it the loss of accuracy in those parts. UHG! Now, what to do?

Travis Serio, my project manager at RJM was certain he had a viable solution. He offered to print some of my most challenging parts on the Viper SLA machine for my evaluation.

Sure enough, the Viper models not only featured better skins than other processes, they’re quite durable as well – and they were accurate where accuracy mattered most - in the detail areas. Now, I had the option to either cast the Viper material directly or to mold the masters and inject waxes for casting. After handling those first Viper parts, it was clear that this is the solution for generating my difficult models.

Just as Travis had insisted, this new process for generating my complex master models has allowed me to get back to running my business. I’m now free to create design geometries that were, at one time, nearly incapable of being “reasonably” brought to market. Throughput is much faster and business has never been better.

Thanks for being there, Travis!mwmsample2
